Discoveries of petrified trees are very important for better understanding of the geological development of the present territory of the Czech Republic. They are surviving witnesses of ancient life and help us to determine the age of geological strata. The first part of the paper deals with the oldest discovery of a petrified tree in the territory of the Czech state in the mines of the town Jáchymov and with other important historical discoveries. The second part of the paper assesses chances of future discoveries of petrified trees in the Czech Republic. The main attention is paid to the area of the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin and the Sokolov Basin. In the conclusion of the paper, the present situation of important occurrences is discussed as well as the co-operation between the author of this paper and museums in the North-western Bohemia.
