Coal Mining and Mining Landscape Changes in the Region of Karvinsko

Coal mining development in recent years and impacts of underground hard coal mining on the landscape of the region of Karvinsko are the main topics of this article. A special focus is put on following issues: subsidence consequences in the region of Karvinsko, which is a part of the coal basin of Ostrava; changes in waste utilisation and disposal; reclamation of the affected landscape; positive changes of mining landscape which results from environmental measures and activities carried out by the company of Ostravsko-karvinské doly, a. s., by the Municipality of Karviná, and by other involved organisations. All these involved entities aim at protecting and shaping a new cultural landscape which would be utilisable for different forms of tourism and recreation. Thus, the image of the region of Karvinsko has been positively transformed.
