Mining impacts on water quality in the Olše River
- VŠB - Technická univerzita Ostrava
Huge amounts of mine water are pumped to the surface in the region of Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The water is subsequently discharged into several surface water streams substantially influencing water quality in the Olše River. The paper assesses the impacts of mining activities on water quality in this river. From 2000 to 2007, approximately 28 331 700 m3 of mine water was discharged via Karvinský stream into the Olše River. Mine water originating in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin is discharged into the "OLZA collector". The reconstruction and relocation of this collector made in 2004 resulted in a distinct decrease of the load in the lower part of the river by about 75 % at the Věřňvice measuring point, respectively by 60 % at the measuring point where the Olše River flows into the Odra River.
