The violet type of quartz is one of the oldest and best known precious stones in the world. The sites, where amethyst occur in the Krušné Hory Mountains, are very often part of historical deposits of iron minerals. The amethyst sites take a really exceptional place in the history of precious stones' extraction. The history of their extraction is more than 600 years long. One of these sites is Ciboušov, a famous site, stones of which were used in the chapels of the Karlštejn Castle by Emperor Charles IV. The paper presents the situation of important sites and possibilities of their protection. A special attention is focused on a newly discovered amethyst site Černý Potok.
