Pyrolysis experiments of brown coal produced in the region of North-western Bohemia
- Výzkumný ústav pro hnědé uhlí, Most
Brown coal was sampled at each operating coal mine in the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin in order to run several pyrolysis experiments. The experiments were made within the research project No. GA 105/09/1554 "The conversion of Czech brown coal with hydrogen rich materials like the method for production of gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons". The main objective of the work was to determine those brown coal parameters that would be convenient for co-pyrolysis with other possible substances. The main focus was put on the process of pyrolysis and on the comparison of particular pyrolysis product yields -tar, semicoke, water, and gas. The experiments included six coal samples from different coal mines within the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin. Before the pyrolysis experiments, the samples were analyzed to specify input parameters and then, they were homogenized to size 1 to 5 mm. The pyrolysis experiments were run under the same conditions, i.e. bellow 650 °C. During the experiments, pyrolysis gas was sampled and analyzed by the method of gas chromatography. Weight balance of particular pyrolysis products was also worked out. The paper includes average results of weight balance for each test and the tests are compared to each other. The produced tar will be used for further experiments in hydrogenation reactor which will be performed in further phases of the project. Based on the pyrolysis gas analysis and the total tar content, we determined which brown coal would be convenient for co-pyrolysis with other suitable materials with high content of organic matter.
