The paper describes the development of forest soil surface layers on a bulldozed plot in the course of 20 years. The study plot is located on the flat top part of the Krušné Hory Mountain at 860 m a.s.l. The bedrock is formed by acid metamorphites (micaschist) and soil type is represented by Cryptopodzol - Podzol. The plot was afforested by the Blue (Colorado) spruce (Picea pungens). In 1984, sown Birch (Betula verrucosa) was also planted in the plot and later dominated in the stand. The results confirmed a favourable role of the birch in humus layer formation and positive influence on forest soil chemical characteristics (pH, soil adsorption complex, nutrient content and amount). The dynamics of soil characteristics was closely connected with litter accumulation and humus layer formation.
