The article describes one of the outputs of the project solved with the support of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic within the period 2011-2014. The summary of information regarding the evaluation of the degree of risk for the beginning of spontaneous processes of brown coal combustion is presented. The described method of evaluation is based on the point assessment of indicators for the MHU criteria and other information received from the operators of coal landfill sites - both on the supply side (a mining company) and on the side of large consumers (energy producers). The comprehensive knowledge of the process development of spontaneous combustion allows reaction in time to eliminate the threat of fires in operational mine landfills or in landfills of coal consumers.
