Coal as primary energy source in 2010 and 2011

The paper deals with the role of coal as a primary energy source in the years 2010 and 2011. Coal production, coal consumption as well as coal's share of electricity generation are presented at the global, the European, and the national level. A special attention is paid to the role of brown coal in the Czech Republic, which is being extracted in two coal basins located in the north-western Bohemia. In the Czech Republic, brown coal reserves amount to 850 million tons and coal's share of primary energy consumption is more than 40 %. Electricity production from coal exceeds 50 % in the Czech Republic.
