Influence of added biomass on quality of brown coal pyrolysis products
- Výzkumný ústav pro hnědé uhlí a.s., Most
Within the research project No. 105/09/1554 "Conversion of Bohemian brown coal with hydrogen rich matters as a liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon obtaining process" funded by the Czech Science Foundation, different sawdust/brown coal ratios were tested during a set of pyrolysis experiments. The objective of the study was to assess the influence of added biomass on the quality of pyrolysis products - liquid organic phase, pyrolysis water, solid pyrolysis products, and gaseous pyrolysis products. In total, 11 blends with different brown coal/biomass ratio were tested. At first, blends were analysed to determine input parameters and their grain size was adapted to the treatment in the laboratory pellet press. The produced pellets were co-pyrolysed under constant conditions, i.e. temperatures ranging from 25 °C to 650 °C. During pyrolysis tests, pyrolysis gases were sampled and analyzed using gas chromatography. Moreover, mass distribution of pyrolysis products was quantified regarding produced semicoke, tar, water, and gas. Average results of mass distributions from different tests are presented and compared. In further phases of the research project, samples of the produced tar will be tested in a hydrogenation reactor.
