Utilisation of DEM simulation of bulk materials in practice

Ing. Robert Brázda, Ph.D., Ing. Zdeněk Poruba, Ph.D.

Many transport and process systems in practice does not work entirely by the operator concepts. The operator then often perform a variety of structural or technological adjustments of the equipment according to the intuition or from experience with similar equipment already functioning or on the basis of methods "trial - error". Any such even unsuccessful attempt ending in failure is beneficial, however, materially, financially and time-consuming. The article presents the option to verify the functionality of proposed modifications in the transport and process equipment not on the physical model, but using a simulation of movement of bulk materials based on numerical methods. This method is known as Discrete Element Method, abbreviated as DEM (Metoda diskrétních prvků in Czech).
