Basalt quarry Kernberg between Rotava and Jindřichovice

RNDr. Petr Rojík, Ph.D.

The paper deals with the geology and mining history of the quarry Kernberg in Krušné hory (Erzgebirge, Ore Mountains) between Jindřichovice and Rotava. The locality was the largest basaltic quarry in the former Czechoslovakia. The historical review is followed by the geological description, mainly volcanogenic rock (nepheline-basanite and pyroclastic) incl. petrography, mineralogy, chemical composition, tectonic, structural and pedological conditions. Finally, the origin of the locality is discussed. There were explosive and effusive periods recognized at Kernberg.
