Breakouts of Quicksand into Historic Galleries Occurring in the Area of the Open-pit Mine Bílina as a Result of Surface Drilling Operations

Underground and opencast brown-coal exploitation sometimes brings complications caused by aquiferous sandy bodls existing within the coal seam overburden. Quicksand breakouts are related to the coal exploitation during all its history. There is a special type of the breakout when quicksand breaks to a historic underground mine workings through a bore hole. The paper summarises events of this type in the Bílina mine area during last 30 years and one of these events is described in detail - a quicksand breakout at the BA57 bore hole in 2007.
