A lot of studies and projects have been published in the Czech Republic after 1990 which have one thing in common: environmental, structural and economical revitalization of so called structurally affected regions, i.e. regions affected by phase-out of mining and heavy industry. Abroad experience and knowledge could be very valuable as similar process took place abroad in last decades of the 20th century and in some areas this process is still in progress. The study focuses on legislative, organizational and institutional tools or instruments, which were successful. One of abroad examples is represented by Germany, especially by the industrial area near River Rhein (Ruhrgebiet).

Keywords: structurally changed region, brownfield regeneration, River Rhein area, Emscher Park, industrial heritage
