The ash yield in the anhydrous state Ad (%) and the degree of coalification determined by the content of the volatile matter on dry, ash free basis Vdaf (%) belong to qualitative parameters which determine the usability of coal for carbonization, underground gasification etc. Another very important indicator of the coal usability is the coal seam thickness (m). In the eighties and nineties of the 20th century, an extensive deposit exploration including 17 deep boreholes took place in the Dětmarovice-Petrovice area of the Upper Silesian Basin. The article presents the qualitative parameters for the Poruba, Saddle, and Lower Suchá members, which were studied extensively enough during the exploration. It has been proved that the coal in this part of the Upper Silesian Basin is of a very high quality and is therefore usable for both traditional and non-standard utilization.
